When I started painting 5 years ago, the last thing I ever expected was to be asked to curate an art show. John Rankine is the curator of all of the art shows, but on occasion, he has guest curators. When he asked me if I wanted to do it, I was shocked, excited, and felt like I was floating on air. To know me is to know that I’m a control freak, so this was right up my alley. Although I have social anxiety and have a hard time contacting people, for some reason, this wasn’t too hard on me. Maybe it was because I felt like I was doing it for John, and that made it easier.
I have many ideas for art show themes, but as I was driving down the road, listening to my current fave band, Sleep Token, I came up with this theme.
“Ooh, let’s talk about chemistry ‘Cause I’m dying to melt through To the heart of her molecules ‘Til the particles part like holy water
If anything She’s an undiscovered element Either born in Hell or Heaven-sent Either way, I’m into it.”
Ok, yes, I’m a dork, but these lyrics made me think about the periodic table and how it would make a great theme for a show. Then, doing research, I discovered the 12 natural elements that really spoke to me on another level. This is what I based my theme, the 12 forces of nature, on. So no, it wasn’t sprung from some deep, thoughtful meaning, only me singing and driving alone in my car one morning.
This is the post John Rankine made about the art shows and curating. We are all immensely lucky to know him and honored every time to be included in his art shows. He is a treasure to our town and the art community.
“After twelve wonderful years of curating the rotating art exhibitions at Brews, I’m excited to share that I’m helping transition this role to a series of guest curators who will decide what gets displayed on the new dark blue walls.
From the very beginning, new owner Chris Piasecki made it clear that art exhibitions would remain a central part of Brews, and I’m grateful for that continued commitment to supporting artists and our creative community.
Beginning Wednesday, March 4, artist Becky Epp steps into the role of guest curator with her themed exhibition, “Everything Elemental,” a show exploring the 12 Forces of Nature.
Please join us for the opening reception from 5–8 p.m. All are welcome, and I hope to see you there!”
This is the info on my first curated art show. About 25 artists created art for this event. I feel honored and privileged to know these people and so happy they trusted me with their art.
“You are invited to BREWS newest art exhibition, Everything’s Elemental: “The 12 Forces of Nature,” which will open with an artist’s reception on Wednesday, March 4th, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The “12 elements of nature” refers to concepts in fantasy, spirituality, or simplified worldviews, commonly including Earth, Water, Wind/Air, Fire, Thunder, Ice, Force, Time, Flower, Shadow, Light, and the Moon, which represent fundamental aspects of life and the universe. These elements can be expanded to include concepts such as spirit, energy, consciousness, space, and nature’s cycles to deepen meaning.
Artists were asked to incorporate at least one of these elements (but preferably more) into their piece.
This exhibition features works in multiple forms by more than 40 talented local artists.
BREWS is a unique coffee, craft beer, and art gallery that showcases rotating art exhibitions every six weeks. Come see their newly renovated space, which remains a hub for artistic expression and community engagement. Get into your element and join us for an evening of art, conversations, friends, and fun.
This show lasts 6 weeks and is a part of a revolving art show at Brews.”
